A water heater is a home appliance that is primarily put out of mind and ignored. Ignored, that is, until something goes wrong with it. Then it seems that hot water is the only thing a home owner can think about.  Unless you like cold water, water heaters are a necessity for your home.   A water heater that’s in need of repair not only results in the entire household taking miserably cold showers, but it can cause serious damage if it happens to spring a leak.

When your water heater is broken, whether it be tankless or conventional, a highly qualified plumber is always the best bet. Benjamin Franklin Plumbing in Birmingham understands all of the ins and outs of repairing water heaters. Whether the problem requires a simple fix or a brand new water heater, we have the know-how to get the job done right.  We have staff on call 24/7 to come and deal with major emergencies that might arise. Punctuality and dependability are our specialty. We work to fit into our customer's schedules.

Unfortunately, not every electric hot water heater can be saved. Sometimes, a brand new water heater must be installed. This can be due to major damage caused by broken pipes, structural damage, or simply wear and tear from years of use. At Ben Franklin Plumbing, we use only the highest quality products, ensuring you get the best possible hardware installed.  There are a variety of water heaters available for installation, and our Birmingham plumbing experts that will work around the clock that will help you service, install, or repair your water heater.

Installing a new hot water heater is a time and labor intensive process. Hot water heaters are expensive and could easily be damaged by unskilled hands. Hiring one of our trained Birmingham plumbers is the best way to avoid damages and to insure that a heater is installed in the quickest fashion possible.

Take a look at some of the more popular domestic water heaters:

Conventional Tank Water Heaters

Most water heaters are tank water heaters which keep a cylindrical tank full of hot water in your home at all times. Tank water heaters are economical and usually are the standard choice for water heaters.  Tank water heaters come in a variety of sizes, and can store 80 gallons or more of water.  Conventional tank water heaters are economical because they cost less to install, and they also utilize electric, natural gas, propane, oil, solar, or geothermal power as an energy source to heat the water.

Benefits of using Conventional Water Heaters

  • A tank full of preheated water that can still be used if the power goes out

  • Will feed multiple fixtures at the same time

  • Gas tank heaters will continue to produce hot water during a power outage

Disadvantages of using Conventional Water Heaters

  • Will eventually run out of hot water if used for an extended period of time

  • Must run every few hours to maintain the temperature in the tank

Solar water heaters

Solar powered water heaters are used in some areas & are installed outside the home, typically on the roof or nearby.  Depending on the local climate, freeze protection, as well as prevention of overheating, must be addressed in the design, installation, and operation of the water heater.  Solar water heaters are great because they preheat water before the water reaches the conventional water heater.  If there is a lot of sunlight, solar heaters can provide all the heat you need for your home.

Desuperheaters

A desuperheater is a device that attaches to your air conditioner or heat pump that recycles waste heat so that it can help heat domestic water.

Tankless Water Heaters

Tankless water heaters are on-demand water heaters and supply hot water throughout the entire home. Unlike conventional tank water heaters, tankless water heaters provide endless supply of hot water. No more running out of hot water in the middle of a shower!

Both gas and electric tankless water heaters are energy efficient. Electric heaters require more amperage than most houses supply and they will only run one fixture at a time. Gas tankless heaters will supply two fixtures at a time, but they usually require a larger gas line, new venting and a modified electrical outlet when converting from a tank type heater.

Benefits of using Tankless Water Heaters

  • Longevity:  Tankless water don’t corrode that fast because they have no tanks. Tankless water heaters will outlast tank water heaters twice as long and sometimes longer.

  • Size:  Tankless water heaters don’t have bulky tanks, so they can be mounted just about anywhere. Point-of-use tankless water heaters are even smaller and are usually mounted under the sink or in an easy access area.

  • Lower energy bills:  Because tankless water heaters only supply water when needed, tankless water heaters use less energy.  Tankless water heater’s efficiency levels are up to 93% or more vs. the conventional tank water heater that is only 60% efficient!

  • Unlimited hot water:  As water is heated while passing through the system an unlimited supply of hot water is available with a tankless water heater however, this can also be a disadvantage as running out of hot water self-limits use while a tankless heater has no such limit.

  • Water damage is minimized:  Tankless water heaters have no tanks to store water, so there are no chances of water damage do to a leak or hole in the tank. There are still risks of water damage from faulty parts such as improper piping or bad fittings

Disadvantages of using Tankless Water Heaters

  • About three times the price of standard tank type heaters

  • Produce a finite volume of hot water per minute

  • Supply a limited number of fixtures

Federal Tax Credits

Federal tax credits are available for a number of home water heating improvements. If the improvements occur at your primary residence (except some instances with solar, where a second home may qualify) and are placed into use before December 31, 2010, you may be eligible to take the credit.

More information on available tax credits for energy-efficient installations can be found on the  Energy Star website.
